Vice President JD Vance brought Hurricane Helene recovery into his October 19 appearance in Hendersonville, North Carolina. The visit coincided with a federal transportation announcement, but the amount he cited and the statewide figure in the official release should be reported separately.
NC Newsline’s account of the event says Vance discussed $858 million in additional transportation-related relief and rebuilding eight major corridors, including I-40 and the Pigeon River Gorge. He also appeared in support of Republican candidates Michael Whatley, Jennifer Balkcom and Laurie Buckhout.
What the federal announcement confirms
The U.S. Department of Transportation’s October 19 release lists $873 million for North Carolina following Helene. It places that amount within more than $1.6 billion in emergency relief announced across 34 states, the District of Columbia and several U.S. territories.
The department describes the money as support for repairs to roads, bridges and other transportation infrastructure. For North Carolina, it cites more than 9,000 damage sites and more than 1,400 road closures associated with the storm’s impact.
These figures describe the official announcement and its stated purpose. They do not establish that every affected road is now repaired, that construction is complete or that the entire amount has already been spent.
